MASTER BEDROOM DESIGN | From Messy to Serene Sanctuary – Discover how we transformed this space into a peaceful retreat with custom storage, soft textures, and calming tones.
This client came to me with a specific challenge and broader aspiration when embarking on his master bedroom renovation project: optimising the storage capacity and flow of the room and making it uniquely his own.
As a busy and time-poor professional, amidst major life changes including separating from a partner, reshaping the living space had become paramount.
Feeling nervous about tackling this transformation, the client sought a professional who could guide him, instilling confidence and helping him reconnect with his individual space.
Considering this, I offered my full-service approach, including room design, design of bespoke joinery, procurement, referral of contractors, art consultancy, styling and full project management.
The challenge was to revitalize the look and feel of this bedroom while staying within a manageable budget, as the client was unsure of their long-term stay in the property. To achieve this, I developed a transformative design focusing on layout, flow, and functionality.
“You came in with that different perspective. There’s so many things that you said about the room that as soon as you said I just thought, of course, of course, that should be there, of course, a giant wardrobe would be blocking out half the light. You really saw the space in one particular way, thinking really outside the box” James | Master bedroom redesign | Cardiff, 2023
I curated the redecoration to introduce individuality and coziness, guiding the client to concentrate the investment on a single impactful piece—the wardrobe—while saving on other elements by repainting existing features like the radiator and some of the switches, and retaining the carpet and bed.
The room’s new aesthetic centers on the impactful yet calming Oval Room Blue N. 85 by Farrow and Ball, applied to all surfaces for a color-drenching effect that envelops walls, ceiling, skirting, and window sills.
Earthy tones and neutrals to establish a grounding and inviting balance. Those warm accents were incorporated throught materials – the wooden custom made oak wardrobe – and accessories.
This now cohesive hue creates an ambiance which is modern and inviting at the same time, drawing the attention to carefully chosen accent pieces, such as artwork and accessories that are meaninful to the client. By unifying the room’s tone and improving layout, the space now feels open, harmonious, and designed with both beauty and practicality in mind.
“You sorted things very clearly from that external perspective but then helped me through that journey. It has been absolutely brilliant and there’s been so many great moments along the way”. James | Master bedroom redesign | Cardiff, 2023
The two alcoves on the side of the chimney breast are fitted with two custom made oak wardrobes. The wardrobes create a design feature in the bedroom thanks to the sleek slatted design of the doors and the floor-to-ceiling heigh. The back wall – originally the projecting chimney breast – is now a recess that encapsulates a wall – hung TV and a sleek custom made desk.
Walls, ceiling, skirting and window sills are painted in Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball with a colour drenching effect. A portion of the wall behind the bed is painted in Oratory by Mylands, to create a backdrop for the four wall hung shelves, adding structure and definition to the scheme. Slim, contemporary venetian blinds in dark blue complete the look, filtering the daylight and offering privacy and light control overnight.
